Make your Bike Ride an EZ-go!

bike, bicycle, electric bikes

HUH???

I started EZgo-Now.com about two years ago. For those of you who have visited before you would have seen a collection of online marketing articles and products inside a blog with an odd name. EZgo-Now just did not fit a marketing blog. Well here’s why. It was intended to be a blog about power assist or hybrid electric bicycles. I am now on my second hybrid & have always had many regular bicycles. I have always had a passion for anything on two wheels. The problem was this blog was to tie in with a physical shop & I was going to sell elect bikes, bike kits, accessories, batteries, parts, etc. Well the learning curve was just a whole lot longer than I ever anticipated. In addition I just got really disillusioned about all the garbage one had to sift through to find honest information.

HOWEVER … . . with gas bouncing back & forth between $3.50 to $5 a gallon IRide your bike. It's like money in the bank am ready, willing & able to push hard on my efforts to promote E – bikes.

Electric bicycles have been around for just about as long as the bicycle itself. This statement will show my age but I can remember a buddy of mine had outfitted his “10 Speed Racing Bike” with a small 12 Volt battery and a little metal friction drive that pushed against the front tire. This was the early 70′s. By the 1980′s there had been improvements and there where a few decent e bikes around but they where still definitely novelty items. Like any alternate energy source in the land of cheap oil the availability and popularity of alternate transportation spikes when oil prices climb, and eases off after the shock wears off. Remember Lee Iacocca’s EBike ? That wasn’t all that long ago.

"Wilderness Energy", Crystalyte, "Largo Scooters", "go-hubTM" Wilderness Energy, Crystalyte, Largo Scooters go-hubTM Motor Technology & Hill Topper all make good motor kits for bicycles. Take a kit like Electricrider’s 48 volt 1,000 watt Phoenix Racer System on 26 inch Rear Wheel using the big Crystalyte Hub Motor for a ride some time & you’ll see some serious performance advancements. There are now even some reliable Li Ion battery packs that are starting to get affordable. Technology keeps getting better & I’m pretty sure the high price of gas is here to stay.

Electric Bikes are slowly and steadily becoming a functional addition to the urban landscape. What will help move bicycles and other forms of alternate transportation forward faster are the folks working behind the scenes.  Urban planners with forward thinking, working to incorporate enhancements like bike lanes, turning lanes, bike paths, modifying intersections, etc.   Electric bikes are here to stay!

P.S. Do you know what another really important aspect of biking  is?  ………. ,Sshh, ….   listen …. . . . . All you hear is the wind.
"no to e bike garbage", e bike, "e bike kits"

Say NO to Internet Garbage

And that pretty much works for everything. From products you buy to web-sites you browse. Think about it. Junk does not last so you need more of it. Buy junk, replace junk, more garbage. Buy quality own it a lifetime no more garbage.

I spend a huge amount of my time browsing the Internet for anything that relates to electric bicycles and cycling. Directly or indirectly, specifically or in a general way if it catches my attention I’ll click it. I have been doing this type of research long enough to know what or what not to click on. Even so I still have to sort through far more garbage than I care to. It’s this seemingly endless amount of information and web sites and my ability to effectively sort through the garbage that leads me to my current subject.

At first I was going to highlight my best (worst) examples of scam reviews and informational garbage articles and follow-up with a list of words & phrases to look for in order to avoid them. Well, …. useful perhaps but I quickly decided it was too much like complaining so I decided to go in the other direction. There are hundreds of web sites that are geared towards electric bikes. Out of those there are dozens of useful sites. Out of those there is in my opinion less than two dozen that are truly good web sites or blogs dedicated to e bikes and practical cycling. I keep this small group of “truly good web sites” appropriately labeled & saved in my favorites. Over the course of a month it’s more than likely I’ll land on their pages at least once.

One such web site is Commute by Bike.com. I read their content quite often & currently have them selected as one of my EZgo-Now RSS WEB PICKS. Now to be fair Commute by Bike is actually one of three sites and some of those have more than one site. They refer to their sites as blogs & from this point on I will as well. The three primary blogs are Commute by Bike, Utility Cycling & The Hub Blogs. Based on their About Pages and their Archives it appears that Commute By Bike has been active since the spring of 2005. Utility Cycling officially appeared in June 09 and came as an outgrowth of Bike Shop Hub.com Blogs. The Bike Shop Hub.com Blogs itself came about on January 11 2006 as an extension of Wandertec. And Wandertec well, ………….. I think I’ll stop there.

Commute by Bike and their other blogs is what I look for in a good blog. As a blog they are easy to navigate and have well written & interesting content. They have only a small amount of outside advertising concentrating instead on cross promotion between their various blogs, forums and shops. As a commuter/utility/cargo blog they stay focused on their reader while at the same time understanding their readers come from a much broader group of people than just cycling enthusiasts. This group includes or maybe it’s the same as the e bike rider. The power assisted bicycle and specifically electric assisted have helped us to think about the bicycle as much as a form transportation as it is just an easier way to ride a bike. Instead of focusing on the bicycle (elite) crowd an e bike blog should be reaching out to anybody looking for a cost-effective and environmentally conscious form of transportation.

"E bike kit", "E bike Conversion kit"I started EZgo-Now.com in 2008 but spent the first two years learning everything necessary to build, operate and monetize the Internet portion of the business. It wasn’t until 2011 that I really began to focus a"Bicycle Accessories","battery powered", e" bike kit" web site on the e bike business. However I had started to follow Utility Cycling as far back as 2009. About a year later when they hooked up with Commute by Bike I began reading them as well. This all happened about the same time I was building EZgo-Now.com and their group of bike blogs helped immensely in guiding me through my planning stages. They where also very instrumental in awaking my senses early on to the fact that e bikes where not just some small niche within cycling. E bikes where in fact a viable form of transportation on their own and should be of interest to anybody that would otherwise be using a car, truck or motorcycle. This is not to say they impacted what I wanted to do with my e bike business but they definitely played a role in how I would market it. I’m now looking for readers and customers in places I had not considered before. You could say I’ve traded my rifle scope for a pair of binoculars.
If I where to summarize their blogs my descriptions would go something like this:

Commute by Bike, e bikeCommute by Bike is a review blog concentrating on practical (commuting) cycling. Their Contact Page reads: “Our mission at Commute By Bike is to provide you with the knowledge, reviews, tips and how to advice for your commuting endeavors”. Not only do they do all the above but they do it better than most. Not only are the reviews honest and original but they’re written in with a sence of humor that is often lacking in this type of writing.

"battery powered", "e bike kit", "bicycle trailer",

Utility Cycling according to their About Page is “a blog and online resource for all things related to the practice of utility cycling”. I think that’s a pretty good description. According to Wikipedia utility cycling encompasses any cycling not done primarily for fitness, recreation or sport, but simply as a means of transport. It is the most common type of cycling in the world. In the US it’s not only UN-common it’s relatively unheard of. Thanks to Utility Cycling there are more people discovering it. You’ll find that Utility Cycling is almost entirely focused on educating people about the many practical uses there are for bicycles and the positive social impact something as simple as cycling can make.

The Bike Shop Hub.com Blogs originally grew out of the building and sale of something called the CELLO Bike Case for BOB Trailers. According to their Wandertec Link the roots of the Bike Shop Hub go back to the development of the Wandertec CELLO Bike Case for BOB Trailers which was launched in 2004. (See the Wandertec Story for a complete history). The Hub Blogs is in one way the retail arm of this group with the Bike Trailer Shop, Bike Bag Shop, Bike Kid Shop and the Bike Tech Shop. Click on any of those shops for a visit. In addition to the retail offerings it is also a central link for the 4 bike forums they host, three additional blogs including one called Family Cycling Blog and a link to Wandertec the manufacturing arm for Bike Trailers & Bags. Please visit the Bike Shop Hub.com Blogs at this link as there is way to much information here for me to properly describe.

Take a look at Commute by Bike and their other blogs if you haven’t found them already. I’m confident you’ll mark them as a favorite bicycling blog and a top spot for a one stop shop of information and products.

It’s only been in the last few years that I’ve seen this tremendous spike of on-line e bike information. On the surface this would appear to be a good thing. Look below the surface however and I’m sorry to say that much of this information is nothing more than thinly disguised and poorly written marketing sites promoting the sale of something e bike related. Worse is the fact that any type of e bike related search fills your first page not just with crappy web sites but with all of the bogus and re-spun articles posted on the free online article directory sites under the disguise of informational articles.

So let me wrap this up where I started but with a promise to continue promoting only good products, good companies and good web sites. In doing so I hope to help reduce the number of bad links clogging our search results. Search engines put a high value on good content AND good traffic. Promote the good web sites and stop clicking on the bad ones and the bad ones will go away. WELL, … yeah it’s slow but at least it’s not making the situation worse. Besides I enjoy building, working on and writing about e bikes so it’s a natural for me. Make it natural for yourself as well. Whenever you do an e bike search look closely at the summary below the link. Look at the preview when you can. Between those two bits of information you can often pick-out the worthless links. Not only will this save you time by not clicking them but you won’t be helping them keep a rating that they never earned and certainly don’t deserve.

The Can Stand System with Bonus Fix-it-Can Kit. Or supporting your coffee habit on a budget.

bike stand, "kick stand", "bike repair kit"

You only need a bike stand when your bike’s not moving. A kick stand doesn’t make your bike go any better, stop faster & it sure doesn’t make look it any better but hey, you gotta admit your bike does looks better standing up than it does laying on the floor. (takes up less room as well) So here’s a quick fix that requires absolutely no assembly, no installation and ONE SIZE WILL FIT ALL. Which consequently makes it a pretty good Christmas gift as well.

Excuse this clear-cut case of using an EZgo-Now.com blog post for such blatant self promotion as this but that’s one of the main advantage’s of being the owner and editor of your own blog. You get to try out new ideas and have some fun once in a while. In addition one of the goals for EZgo-Now.com is to make it a go-to source for our readers to find money-saving ideas and to save money by doing things themselves. So bear with me. It’s a short post.

The Can Stand System with Bonus Fix-it-Can Kit is a unique, cheap & quick way to get your bike off the floor. The Bonus Fix-it-Can Kit that’s inside The Can Stand contains the Velcro straps, a tire repair kit, mini bungee straps plus extra storage space for quite a number of additional tools. When it arrives just open the box, pick your bike up off the floor, slide the can under the pedal, pull your brake lever snug & wrap it tight with the Velcro strap. DONE!

Now I’ve been using this stuff to keep my bikes upright at home & on the road for a

number of years. I also recycle my smaller plastic coffee cans and use them as organizers in the shop & as totes to carry my emergency repair tools around. So I decided to have some fun & see if I could put something together to use as a promotional piece for the blog and the bike shop. This is what I’ve come up with so far & I think it’s a pretty good deal. Of course with the average USPS charge at $6 a copy I’m selling it at a loss. But that’s OK, it’s fun so check it.

The CAN STAND is $9.95 & that includes the shipping. This is the same basic recipe for what you’ll receive if you buy the kit. You can also adjust this to suit your own taste & make your own Can Stand & bike kit: Biking is fun, make sure you have some. I do.

These are available at our  eBay Store EZ-Tools-Now or you can purchase them here using the BUY NOW button.

Take (1) 32 oz metal coffee can, paint it & decal to suit taste. (This is the Can-Stand) Cut & glue in tempered cardboard to re-enforce the plastic lid. (this is needed if you plan to rest your pedals on the lid instead of the metal bottom.) Purchase a pack of non-slotted Velcro cable ties that are between 9″ & 12 ” long. (You only use (1) at a time but they get lost. I send 4) Take (1) 15 oz metal or plastic coffee can, remove the label & decorate this to suit your taste. (This is the Fix-it-Can) The Fix-it-Can in this sale has 1 tire repair kit with patches, tire levers, alcohol prep pads & 2 emergency tire boots for tire repair in the event of blow-outs, slashes, gashes, etc. Plus 4 Mini Bungee Stretch cords (10″ L x 3/16″) Because you always need these.

Additional to the above items I keep this stuff in my kit as well. 1 spare tube, a Co2 tire inflater with 3 cartridges, a TOPEAK power 15 tool which is a tire lever holding 14 popular allen & wrench sizes, a small roll of elect. tape & a few feet of mechanics wire. I also have a neat little multi tool and a little mini mag light. I used to keep my first aid kit jammed in here as well but I’ve since moved that into it’s own container.

This is a simple, cheap bike stand system to use at home or take it with it you. Always take your Velcro brake lock with you since you can always find something to lean your bike on.

KEEP YOUR BIKE OFF OF THE FLOOR!

EZgo-now bike blogI haven’t done much writing in the last few weeks so I started browsing the Internet for some inspiration. Perhaps something new and original like “The Revenge of the Electric Bike”. Well alas no such luck. However I am continualey encouraged and intrigued by the e-bike markets on-going progress and some of the nifty new ideas I so often come across.

On the on-going progress of e-bikes  side of things is the time and money some of the major players in the transportation industry are putting into developing e-bike technology. Please don’t mistake this as a belief that the future of the e-bike is in the hands of these captain’s of industry. Quite the contrary. However, it does show that the the e-bike has come a long way from that of a passing curiosity or just another recreational plaything.  E-bikes are real transportation and are here to stay.

When companies like Daimler Benz, Volkswagon and Bosch dump hundreds of millions of dollars into the research and development of e-bikes and ebike drive systems we can be sure that e-bikes are more than just a passing fad. Have a look at some of these prototypes and products.

For plans visit:http://electricbicycletrailer.com/

No reason what so ever as it turns out. I just ordered the plans for the above Bicycle Cargo Push Trailer. (Yes that mean’s I’m planing to build one.) The links have video so I didn’t waste your time putting one here. I’ve been really psyched about buying or building a powered push trailer ever since I saw my first one a few years ago. Since then I have come across quite a few websites for powered push trailers and plans for building them. I’ve seen YouTube videos and PDF schematics for everything from professional looking blue prints to plans for modifying a Garden Way Cart. (Hey, I got one of those) The one I choose appears to be professionally built, well-engineered and complete. “Complete” being the operative word here. Actually the Bicycle Cargo Push Trailer is the only one I can say that about. It’s designed to be powered by an off-the-shelf hub-motor drive system so outside of the steel, hardware and misc. fasteners everything else can be readily purchased from a **** local bike shop or on-line. Now I know from first hand experience that what ever price I initially put into my labor cost for a project I should just go ahead and double it. So I did and with that in mind I hope to build a finished product that looks and performs as well as Dave’s Trailer does & still sell it at a profit. I’m at least a year away from building this thing let alone selling it but I’ll do my best to keep you posted.Trailers, ridekick, bike trailer

In the mean time if your interested in electric trailers I have included a resource list for websites that I found exceptionally useful. The Electric Push Trailer Plans I purchased are available at http://electricbicycletrailer.com/. unfortunately I could only find three sources for a “complete”, pre-built and ready-to-go powered push trailer. I included those in my resource list. When I first decided to post this article I had hoped to include a more comprehensive list, but the bottom line is there’s just not a lot out there. As I mentioned earlier, there are a lot of links to explore but if you’re looking for a finished product you probably won’t find much more than I did. Whatever you do find however please leave us a comment or send us an email. I’ll continue to update this list as I find new sources.

As a final note there is a third and possibly the better way to get a powered trailer for your bike. Modify one! There is a ton of good bike trailers on the market today. New & used. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination or an engineering degree to envision retro-fitting one of these with a hub-motor drive system. With today’s newer lighter weight geared hub motors & LiFePo4 batteries these trailers could still maintain much of their capacity & portability. I regularly review bike trailers on this website and for everyone I review there is ten more I havent. Some of these are better suited for modification than others. I personally would suggest buying a used one if at all possible. You can pick them up for 50% to 90% off the new price. I’ve even picked one up for free last year.

Well anyway now you have something else to think about. Here’s my list starting with the “complete” e-powered bike trailers.

Resource List

E-powered bike trailers:

Batteries and controllers:

E-bike components:

**** I always recommend buying local for many reasons not the least of which is freight. However e-bikes & e-bike kits & accessories are still only carried by a relatively small percentage of bike shops. Finding a local one can often prove to be challenge.

"Reality Sucks", Bicycles, transportation

stop-pedaling-start-driving "Reality Sucks"

Spin it any way you want. The real “Reality Sucks” part about this obvious marketing blunder is the fact it became the idea for an advertisement in the first place. Not to mention one that was targeted to college students.

But the people spoke, social media spread their message, GM listened and yanked the ad. “Anti Bike Advertising” will not be accepted.

WE WON! Bicycles as transportation is a reality. Cycling has been accepted as a viable means of getting around. Well ……… no, not exactly. But it does mean that cycling as “real transportation” has moved just a little closer into that type of main stream thinking.

For most of us this is a very exciting time to be involved with cycling. As a cyclist my choices for riding apparel, products & accessories seem endless. As the owner and editor of an e-bike blog the depth & breadth of products to sell and the subjects to talk about is enormous. Just a few days ago I was reading about a forward thinking Ford e-bike prototype. Today I’m reading how a slew of negative comments persuaded General Motors to yank their ill-conceived anti bike flavored car advertisement.
So great work people. I’ve been saying all year that 2012 will be the year that e-bikes go from a novel idea to a real world product. Now I’m sure of it.

Well enough said. As usual my short comment has turned into an essay. Here’s a link to a copy of the GM ad “Reality Sucks” in Urban Velo. And if you need to get up to speed on the subject or just want to support your own opinion go ahead & Google “GM Reality Sucks”.

Thanks for reading.

Matt

FYI - I just ran across this & felt compelled to re-post it. Not because it the it’s the neatest, most advanced, or the best e-bike proto-type I’ve ever seen. (although it ranks real high in all of those) No …… It’s because when a major transportation industry manufacturer outside of the bicycle industry makes this kind of effort I feel that prehaps this time around e-bikes are here to stay.  Your thoughts?

Ford develops its first electric bicycle | Techi.com

The recent Frankfurt Motor Show played host to some innovative new concept cars featuring eco-friendly powertrains and advanced in-vehicle communications. And among the advanced concepts on display was Ford’s first foray into the world of bicycling.

The E-Bike Concept demonstrates how Ford’s automotive design language can translate to a bicycle. The bike’s frame is made from aluminum and carbon fiber and weighs just 5.5 pounds. It also features a carbon fiber Giant SLR stem, Selle Italia SLR XC saddle, Mavic Elipse wheels, Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal gear hub and Shimano Rapidfire shifters.

But the E-Bike is far from a conventional bicycle, despite some pretty conventional hardware. It’s powered by a a front-wheel, hub-mounted motor that produces 350 watts and features a 9.3 amp-hour lithium-ion battery. Ford says the E-Bike will cover 53 miles on a single charge and reach a top speed of 15.5 miles per hour. A handlebar-mounted display provides trip information and allows the rider to select from three support modes – Economy, Comfort and Sport.

“The E-Bike market is growing very, very rapidly, with some 30 million units sold globally last year,” said Axel Wilke, director, vehicle personalization, Ford Customer Service Division Europe. “We see E-Bikes as an important element of urban electric mobility. More and more people are using E‑Bikes for short distance commuting and they are becoming comfortable with the concept of electric mobility.”

Ford says E-Bike Concept could be an innovative solution for eco-friendly mobility, and we couldn’t agree more. It not only boasts a sleek design, but the E-Bike is also infused with cutting-edge technology that would make it an attractive mode of transportation in any urban setting.

Wilke added, “With its cutting edge design, cross-gender appeal, robust build quality and high performance drive package, we believe the Ford E-Bike Concept would be the perfect addition to the e‑mobility solutions we will offer.”
