OK,from part 1 the TOTAL COST OF HARDWARE came to $1.674. In order to build Night-Rider I had to write $1,674.00 worth of checks. Keep in mind; these are the prices I paid delivered to my shop in Carlisle, PA. I spend a lot of time shopping for the best deals, I buy in small quantities & combine orders to reduce or eliminate freight & as a dealer I often get additional discounts off the prices that you would pay buying one or two things at a time.

Now, in addition to the time spent procuring those parts, there is the time spent making these little pieces and parts come together to form a big electric bike. How much time is that? From start to finish, from receiving everything in & un-packing it, to modifying the parts & installing them, to rolling it out the door and taking it for a test ride, it took about a week. I did do other things during that week, but it’s safe to say that it took at least 25 hours. At a discounted shop rate of $20 an hour that’s $500. So now the cost of our electric bicycle is up to $2,174. If I were to be satisfied with making only a 10% margin on everything then the selling price of this bike should be $2,391.40. Let’s round that up to a proper sounding retail price of $2,399.99. That’s it $2,399.99 is the price I’ll have to ask for Night-Rider in order to turn a profit. The question now is, Can I get it?

Wow, you say, I was thinking it would be just a few hundred bucks more than the base bike. I mean, I’ve seen e-bike bikes advertised at Wal-Mart for under $600 & there’s all kinds of e-bike kits on Ebay for $250. Hell I could buy a used car for $2,400.

If this sounds like you, then I’ll assume you’re the average consumer. Or in my case the average customer. And that’s kind of what I’m up against. Other than having seen them advertised on the Internet & knowing you’d like to have one, you don’t really know too much else about them. Nor had you really planned on spending a bunch of time researching them. You just wanted to find a decent bike, for a decent price, pay for it, then take it home & go for a ride.

Well, since it’s my job to educate my readers about e-bikes & I have to determine the “asking price” for Night-Rider anyway let’s check out some comparable e-bikes together.

First I’ll try to determine how much it would cost a medium sized company in the USA to build “GOOD” entry level e-bikes. This will be EZgo-Now’s “Virtual Factory Bike” . I’ll start by purchasing the cheapest, components that still offer the necessary performance & reliability required to build a good bike. I’ll order in 100 plus quantities to get the best wholesale pricing FOB freight prepaid to my shop door. In order to stay competitive with all of the other great sounding poorly built e-bikes I’ll advertise the basic bike price (a stripper) & then offer a full list of options. To keep things simple I’ll use a 30% mark-up on parts & labor in hopes of making a profit.

  • $12 Throttle
  • $25 Motor Controller
  • $7 battery bags
  • $11 racks
  • $4 misc. hardware & fasteners
  • $200 for LiFeP04 36V 10 amp battery packs
  • $180 for a pre-built to my spec. MTB bike
  • $150 labor 2 hrs. @ $75 per hr.

  • Average Total spent on options $150.00
  • $22 S&H cost
  • Total bike & options $893 x 1.30 = $1,160.09

In my case the customer will pay a flat $50 for S&H, making the grand total for my “Virtual Factory Bike”  $1,210.09.

The current e-bike fleet at EZgo-Now

This is what’s in our driveway at the moment. To demonstrate the full potential of this amazing & amazingly simple form of alternative transportation I use e-bikes almost exclusively for all of my local runs. Since some items are too much for a pair of saddle bags or rear rack I also use the very neat RideKick Trailer on many of my runs. Although it’s designed to turn any bike you own into an e-bike it of course can also be hooked up to your existing e-bike. Since I sometimes have to deliver or pick up bicycles I made a 5th wheel attachment for towing bicycles that simply sets in the bottom of the RideKick Trailer. (lid removed) Then I remove the wheel of the bike being transported a re-bolt the forks to the 5th wheel attachment. The front wheel gets strapped to the side of the bike being towed & sits atop of the now secured pedals. (DON’T BACK-UP) I also use a small ratchet strap & cinch the top of the fork tube to the RideKick Trailer frame where the lid had been. I have to say, this is one slick way to transport an extra bike. Outside of making sure your brakes are up to the task of stopping this load & not backing up, it is one very smooth ride. Oh yeah. An E-Trailer + an E-Bike = very quick acceleration to 20 MPH. Did I invent the worlds very first “Bicycle Tow Dolly”? I doubt it although I have never seen this done. No reason what so ever as it turns out. I just ordered the plans for the above Bicycle Cargo Push Trailer. (Yes that mean’s I’m planing to build one.) The links have video so I didn’t waste your time putting one here. I’ve been really psyched about buying or building a powered push trailer ever since I saw my first one a few years ago. Since then I have come across quite a few websites for powered push trailers and plans for building them. I’ve seen YouTube videos and PDF schematics for everything from professional looking blue prints to plans for modifying a Garden Way Cart. (Hey, I got one of those) The one I choose appears to be professionally built, well-engineered and complete. “Complete” being the operative word here. Actually the Bicycle Cargo Push Trailer is the only one I can say that about. It’s designed to be powered by an off-the-shelf hub-motor drive system so outside of the steel, hardware and misc. fasteners everything else can be readily purchased from a **** local bike shop or on-line. Now I know from first hand experience that what ever price I initially put into my labor cost for a project I should just go ahead and double it. So I did and with that in mind I hope to build a finished product that looks and performs as well as Dave’s Trailer does & still sell it at a profit. I’m at least a year away from building this thing let alone selling it but I’ll do my best to keep you posted.

Since writing this article about two years ago I have signed up as a Ridekick  dealer and took delivery of one last summer 2013. The  Ridekick  has been a great little trailer and with a price of $699.00 is quite affordable and a good option for any body wanting to add electric assist plus additional carrying capacity to their current bicycle. You can read my article on the Ridekick Push Trailer here Having the Ridekick trailer to use put building one myself on the back burner. However, as of May 2014 Ridekick is completely sold out of trailers and will not have any until sometime in 2015. Perhaps building the Bicycle Cargo Push Trailer just got moved up a notch. FYI - I just ran across this & felt compelled to re-post it. Not because it the it’s the neatest, most advanced, or the best e-bike proto-type I’ve ever seen. (although it ranks real high in all of those) No …… It’s because when a major transportation industry manufacturer outside of the bicycle industry makes this kind of effort I feel that prehaps this time around e-bikes are here to stay.  Your thoughts?

Ford develops its first electric bicycle | Techi.com

The recent Frankfurt Motor Show played host to some innovative new concept cars featuring eco-friendly powertrains and advanced in-vehicle communications. And among the advanced concepts on display was Ford’s first foray into the world of bicycling.

The E-Bike Concept demonstrates how Ford’s automotive design language can translate to a bicycle. The bike’s frame is made from aluminum and carbon fiber and weighs just 5.5 pounds. It also features a carbon fiber Giant SLR stem, Selle Italia SLR XC saddle, Mavic Elipse wheels, Shimano Alfine 11-speed internal gear hub and Shimano Rapidfire shifters.

But the E-Bike is far from a conventional bicycle, despite some pretty conventional hardware. It’s powered by a a front-wheel, hub-mounted motor that produces 350 watts and features a 9.3 amp-hour lithium-ion battery. Ford says the E-Bike will cover 53 miles on a single charge and reach a top speed of 15.5 miles per hour. A handlebar-mounted display provides trip information and allows the rider to select from three support modes – Economy, Comfort and Sport.

“The E-Bike market is growing very, very rapidly, with some 30 million units sold globally last year,” said Axel Wilke, director, vehicle personalization, Ford Customer Service Division Europe. “We see E-Bikes as an important element of urban electric mobility. More and more people are using E‑Bikes for short distance commuting and they are becoming comfortable with the concept of electric mobility.”

Ford says E-Bike Concept could be an innovative solution for eco-friendly mobility, and we couldn’t agree more. It not only boasts a sleek design, but the E-Bike is also infused with cutting-edge technology that would make it an attractive mode of transportation in any urban setting.

Wilke added, “With its cutting edge design, cross-gender appeal, robust build quality and high performance drive package, we believe the Ford E-Bike Concept would be the perfect addition to the e‑mobility solutions we will offer.”
